Odoo Community hosting: buy an operating service, not a server.
Odoo Community can run on your hardware, a cloud VPS, private infrastructure or a managed provider. The software core is LGPLv3 with no Enterprise subscription or per-user licence required. The useful comparison is who secures, backs up, monitors, supports and upgrades it—and what happens when you leave.

The direct answer: choose DIY Community hosting if you already have reliable Linux, PostgreSQL and security operations. Choose managed hosting when you want Community’s licensing model but not routine infrastructure ownership. Choose more specialized architecture when compliance, high availability or private connectivity requires it.
Odin is a managed Community hosting vendor. We are not a neutral marketplace and have a commercial interest in the managed answer. The criteria below are designed to expose weak managed offers—including ours if we fail them.
Community is free software; hosting is a service
Odoo’s official licence page identifies Community code under LGPLv3 and Enterprise code under a separate proprietary licence. Hosting Community does not require an Enterprise subscription or per-user licence. It also does not make compute, storage, administration, support, backups or upgrades free.
Do not compare a bare VPS invoice with a managed service invoice and call the difference markup. First normalize scope: deployment, staging, TLS, monitoring, remote backup retention, restore tests, patches, incident support and major upgrades. If you are still deciding which software edition fits, read Odoo Community versus Enterprise.
Run Odoo on your own premises
Local infrastructure can satisfy private-network, plant-connectivity or specific data-control requirements. It can also keep operations running across a constrained external link if the surrounding design supports that goal.
You own power, hardware, physical security, internet redundancy, certificates, patching, PostgreSQL, backup copies and disaster recovery. A backup in the same building is not a site-loss plan. This model is strongest when those capabilities already exist, not when an ERP project is expected to create them accidentally.
Rent a VPS and manage it yourself
A cloud VPS gives fast provisioning and access to durable storage, snapshots and multiple regions. It is still self-hosting: the infrastructure vendor does not ordinarily configure Odoo’s reverse proxy, dbfilter, database manager, addon compatibility or business recovery.
This is often the best-value option for a technically capable team running a simple workload. Use official Odoo packages, source instructions or Docker, then apply the full production requirements checklist. Cheap compute does not guarantee a cheap five-year system.
Buy managed Odoo Community hosting
A competent provider operates the stack while preserving Community-compatible software and modules. Scope varies dramatically. “Managed” may mean only that the VM boots, or it may include application monitoring, off-server backups, tested restoration, patching, staging and version upgrades.
Ask for precise answers in writing. Who responds to an unavailable service? How quickly? Are major Odoo upgrades included or separately quoted? Does the provider test custom modules? Can you download a current database and matching filestore without an exit fee? Can you choose another Odoo specialist later?
A managed host is not automatically an implementation consultant, accountant, compliance adviser or custom developer. Those can be separate roles. A partner is optional for simple deployment; complex migration, local statutory requirements and heavy customization may warrant expertise beyond the host.
Build a private-cloud or high-availability platform
Organizations with strict recovery objectives, segmented networks, regional controls or large workloads may need redundant proxies, multiple application nodes, database failover, centralized observability and practiced disaster recovery. Kubernetes is one possible tool, not a requirement and not a substitute for understanding Odoo’s state.
Complexity must earn its place. A well-managed single-node system with strong recovery can be more reliable than an untested cluster. Define acceptable outage and data loss first; design only what those objectives justify.
Ask every Odoo Community host these questions
| Area | Question | Good evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Can we export and leave? | Database plus filestore, documented process, no ambiguity |
| Recovery | Where are backups and are restores tested? | Remote copies, retention, monitored jobs, restore record |
| Security | Who handles TLS and patches? | Named scope, cadence, vulnerability response |
| Availability | Who receives alerts? | Monitoring, response window, escalation path |
| Upgrades | Are major versions included? | Staging rehearsal, module review, cutover process |
| Exit | What happens at termination? | Portable data, timelines, deletion and handover terms |
Reject vague ownership and impossible promises
- “Zero maintenance”: every live system needs patching, monitoring and lifecycle work.
- “Backups included” without restore detail: ask what is copied, where, how long and when it was last restored.
- “Unlimited” without capacity terms: users may be unlimited while CPU, storage and support are not.
- No upgrade definition: routine patches and major-version migrations are different work.
- Provider-controlled exit: your business should not depend on permission to receive its database and filestore.
- Guaranteed savings: Community can change cost structure but cannot guarantee a lower total.
Match the host to the work you want to retain
Choose self-managed hosting when infrastructure is a capability you want to own and can staff. Choose managed Community when your internal advantage lies elsewhere and a clear service can take routine operations. Choose Odoo Online or Odoo.sh when Enterprise features and Odoo’s platform model fit better; compare architectures in Odoo self-hosted versus cloud.
Price matters after scope. For Odin’s actual commercial terms, inclusions and exclusions, see flat-fee Odoo hosting. Keeping that offer on its own page avoids turning this buyer guide into a duplicate sales page.

FAQ
Does Odoo Community require a paid licence?
No. Odoo Community’s core is LGPLv3 and does not require an Enterprise subscription or per-user licence. Hosting, administration, support, custom work and upgrades can still cost money.
Can Odoo Community run in the cloud?
Yes. You can run Community on a cloud VPS or private-cloud architecture, or contract a managed provider. If your team operates the stack, it remains self-hosted even on rented cloud infrastructure.
What should managed Odoo hosting include?
At minimum, define deployment, HTTPS, monitoring, security patching, remote database-plus-filestore backups, restore testing, incident response and upgrade responsibility. Never assume “managed” includes all of them.
Can I move Odoo Community to another host?
Technically, a complete database, matching filestore, compatible addons and configuration can be moved. Confirm contractual export access, timing, fees and handover support before signing.
