Odoo Community vs Enterprise.

We host Odoo Community, so we have an interest here. That's exactly why the "what you lose" section below is the longest one on the page — you shouldn't take a Community recommendation from someone who won't tell you what's missing.

The short version

Note the API row. Community has full external API access; Enterprise gates it behind the Custom plan. That surprises people, and it's the one line where the free edition is less restricted than the paid one. Full cost of that gate: Odoo external API access: what it really costs.

What you actually get in Community

More than the pages selling Enterprise licences tend to say. The core is genuinely the same software:

That's most of an ERP. A distribution business running Sales, Purchase, Inventory and Invoicing on Community is running the same code an Enterprise customer runs, on the same database engine, with the same performance.

What you lose — the honest list

The ones that genuinely matter

Odoo Studio. The drag-and-drop customisation tool — add fields, edit views, build simple apps without code. This is the single biggest gap and it's the reason most people end up on Custom. Developer mode does not unlock Studio on Community. The practical alternatives are compared in Odoo Studio for Community Edition.

Full Accounting. Community has Invoicing. Enterprise has the complete accounting suite — bank synchronisation, reconciliation tooling, follow-up automation, the full statutory reporting set, asset and deferred revenue management. If your accountant works inside Odoo, this is usually the deciding line item.

Official Odoo support and the upgrade service. No ticket queue to Odoo SA, and no managed version upgrade. You handle upgrades yourself or someone handles them for you.

Odoo.sh. Odoo's own PaaS is Enterprise-only. Community means self-hosting or a provider.

The mobile app. Community is browser-only on phones. Usually fine, occasionally not.

How to use this list properly: don't count it. Read it and find the ones you'd genuinely use. Most businesses will use zero to two. A field service company that needs Field Service should buy Enterprise and stop reading. A distributor who'd use Barcode and nothing else has a much narrower decision — and Barcode alone rarely justifies $31 per person per month across the whole company.

The arithmetic

Community isn't free in total — you pay for hosting, and you own upgrades and maintenance. But the shape of the decision is: is Studio plus support plus a couple of apps worth $9,000–$18,000 a year, growing every time you hire?

For some businesses, comfortably. For most of the ones we talk to, it's a per-seat bill for capabilities they use rarely — and the per-seat model has a second cost that doesn't show up in a spreadsheet: it quietly discourages giving warehouse, workshop and shop-floor staff access to a system that works better when everyone's in it.

Choose Enterprise if…

• Your accountant works in Odoo daily and needs the full accounting suite
• You'd use Field Service, Helpdesk, PLM, Quality or Subscriptions as a core part of operations
• You want Odoo SA on a support contract and a managed upgrade path
• You have no technical resource at all and no provider handling it
• Studio in the hands of non-developers is genuinely how you plan to iterate

Choose Community if…

• Sales, Purchase, Inventory, Manufacturing, Project and Invoicing cover you
• You have a provider — or the appetite — to handle hosting and upgrades
• Per-seat licensing is a real constraint on headcount or on who gets access
• Your accounting runs elsewhere, or Invoicing plus a good bookkeeper is enough
• You'd rather spend the licence budget on making the system fit

Three things to check before deciding

1. Do you need external API access? Community includes it. Enterprise Standard doesn't — you'd need Custom at roughly double. If you're planning integrations, this can invert the cost comparison entirely — see what external API access really costs.

2. Whose account is your database under? Ask in writing, whichever edition you choose. There are documented cases of implementation partners creating client databases under the partner's own Odoo account and later revoking access. Your database should be yours, and you should be able to download it on demand — see who owns your Odoo database.

3. What's the upgrade plan? Community means somebody upgrades you. That's fine when it's clearly someone's job and painful when everyone assumed it was someone else's.

The middle option people miss

The choice isn't only "pay per seat" or "run it yourself."
