Odoo self-hosted vs cloud: choose who owns the work.

The direct answer: “cloud” is not one architecture. Odoo Online is software as a service; Odoo.sh is Odoo’s platform for developing and hosting customized Enterprise databases; a cloud VPS you administer is still self-hosting. Decide by required modules, operational ownership, data constraints and exit plan.

Separate product, platform and infrastructure

Edition and hosting are related but not identical questions. Community’s core is LGPLv3, free and open source, and does not require an Enterprise subscription or per-user licence. Enterprise adds proprietary applications and licensed services. Read the separate Community versus Enterprise guide before treating hosting as the only decision.

Optimize for simplicity and a standard system

Odoo’s official Odoo Online documentation describes the hosted service. Odoo operates the servers, core platform availability and platform backups, so your team avoids Linux, PostgreSQL, reverse-proxy and certificate administration.

The trade-off is platform control. If your implementation depends on arbitrary server access or ordinary third-party Python addons, Online is not the self-hosted equivalent. Online is often the rational choice when standard Odoo fits and the organization values vendor operation more than infrastructure freedom.

Use a managed platform for customized Enterprise

Odoo’s Odoo.sh documentation presents a cloud platform connected to Git repositories, with development, staging and production branches plus platform tooling. This suits teams shipping custom modules while wanting Odoo to operate the hosting layer.

It does not eliminate application engineering. You still own requirements, code quality, addon compatibility, testing, data migration and production release decisions. It is tied to the Enterprise/Custom commercial model, so evaluate subscription and platform resources together rather than quoting one component as the whole cost.

Buy control by accepting operational responsibility

Self-hosting can run in your office, a data center, a private cloud or an ordinary cloud account. The location does not change ownership: if your organization controls the operating system and service stack, it is self-hosted.

That control supports custom network boundaries, chosen regions, private connectivity, Community or Enterprise deployments, deep integrations and your preferred monitoring stack. It also makes HTTPS, reverse proxying, dbfilter, database-manager restrictions, patching, remote database-plus-filestore backups, incident response and upgrade planning your responsibility. Control is not the same as compliance

Self-hosting may make data residency, private networking and customer-managed keys easier to design, but it does not certify the result. You must produce evidence: access controls, logs, vulnerability handling, retention, recovery tests, vendor contracts and documented responsibilities.

A hosted platform can reduce infrastructure risk through standardization, but you still configure users, roles, integrations and business retention. Compare actual controls and contractual commitments. “Cloud is secure” and “on premises is private” are both incomplete statements.

Compare total responsibility, not server rent

Self-hosting does not guarantee savings. Include compute, storage, traffic, backup copies, monitoring, engineering time, incident coverage, security work, test environments and major upgrades. Community removes the Enterprise per-user licence requirement; it does not remove those operating costs.

Cloud subscriptions can appear more expensive per user while replacing substantial administration. Conversely, a stable Community workload with capable in-house operations may have excellent economics. Model three to five years, likely user growth and one difficult upgrade. Choose the least complex model that meets the requirement

• Choose Odoo Online when standard functionality fits and you want Odoo to carry most infrastructure work.
• Choose Odoo.sh when you need customized Enterprise with an integrated branch-based platform.
• Choose self-hosting when infrastructure control, Community, network design or data constraints justify a real operations function.
• Choose managed Community when Community’s apps fit but your team should not own routine hosting and upgrades.

A partner is optional for simple, well-scoped projects. Complex migration, compliance interpretation, localization, high availability or extensive customization can make specialist expertise a sensible risk purchase.
