Odoo self-hosted pricing: free software is not a free system.

Odoo Community has no Enterprise subscription charge. A production deployment still needs infrastructure, backups, email delivery, monitoring, administration, support, implementation, modules and major-version work. Price those layers separately, then compare DIY Community, managed Community and self-hosted Enterprise on the same scope.

Self-hosted Odoo total cost of ownership model

The direct answer: self-hosted Odoo Community can be free to license, because Odoo 19 Community is LGPLv3 and does not require an Enterprise subscription. It is not free to operate responsibly. Self-hosted Enterprise adds a valid subscription for the correct user count while leaving you responsible for the on-premise infrastructure.

No universal monthly number is honest. User count, workload, availability, jurisdiction, custom code and internal salaries vary. Use the model below with current supplier quotes and measured internal time.

License first

Separate “free Odoo” from free hosting

Odoo’s Odoo 19 license documentation calls Community LGPLv3 and requires a valid Enterprise subscription to use Enterprise code. Therefore the Community line in your budget is $0 Enterprise subscription—not “$0 total cost” and not a promise that every module is free.

Enterprise pricing is commercial and can depend on users, plan, country, contract term and included services. Check Odoo’s live pricing page and editions comparison when you model it. Do not copy an old per-user figure into a five-year forecast.

Use one formula for all three options

Five-year TCO = recurring platform costs + recurring people costs + implementation + modules/customization + major upgrades + risk allowance − recoverable residual value. Keep tax and financing treatment consistent. Record whether staff time is cash expenditure or opportunity cost, but do not value it at zero merely because someone is already employed.

The small VPS is usually the smallest line

Odoo’s production deployment guide requires more than a running process: secure the database manager, use an appropriate proxy and HTTPS configuration, and make daily database-plus-filestore backups to a remote server inaccessible from production. A credible budget also includes restoration exercises and someone receiving alerts.

On-premise email is another service boundary. Odoo’s email documentation says on-premise users configure outgoing and incoming email; SMTP, domains, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, inbound aliases and provider limits can create both fees and administration.

The official package and source installation guides explain two supported starting points. Odoo’s administration overview explicitly says production package installs need additional deployment and maintenance work; source gives flexibility, not free operations.

Ask managed providers exactly who restores backups, patches dependencies, responds after hours, maintains third-party modules and performs major upgrades. Ask the same of your internal team. “Managed” is scope, not a technical architecture.

Implementation, support and customization are different budgets

Implementation gets the business onto Odoo: decisions, configuration, clean data, imports, permissions, training and cutover. Hosting operations keep the service available and recoverable. Customization changes software behavior. Support diagnoses problems and helps users. One supplier may sell all four, but a hosting invoice should not be assumed to include them.

Odoo’s official partner-selection guidance says to examine implementation methodology, relevant expertise, code ownership, maintenance and upgrade cost. Its warning is economically important: custom code creates an ongoing maintenance burden. Give each addon an owner, supported versions, tests and an expected replacement or migration path.

Budgeting

Run base, growth and failure-year scenarios

  • Base case: current users and transactions, normal support, planned maintenance, one staging environment.
  • Growth case: more workers, data, integrations, email volume, storage and support demand.
  • Failure year: a restore, security incident, unavailable maintainer or urgent module replacement.
  • Upgrade year: duplicate environment, migration, addon remediation, user acceptance and rollback window.

Divide the resulting TCO by an operational measure—active user-month, order, invoice or warehouse—to make options comparable. Do not claim guaranteed savings: a well-run DIY system can be economical, while an under-resourced one can cost more through downtime and rework.

Is self-hosted Odoo Community free?

The Community software has a $0 Enterprise subscription requirement under LGPLv3. Production hosting, backups, mail, monitoring, administration, support, modules, implementation and upgrades still consume money or staff time.

What is the biggest hidden Odoo self-hosting cost?

Usually people and lifecycle work, not the VPS: administration, incident response, application support, addon maintenance and major upgrades. The largest item depends on your requirements and internal capability.

Does an Odoo Enterprise subscription include self-hosted infrastructure?

Do not assume it does. Enterprise licences software and associated eligible services under the selected plan; an on-premise deployment still needs infrastructure and operations. Confirm the current contract and pricing scope with Odoo.

Is managed Odoo Community always cheaper than Enterprise?
